If these are the "uglies," then what do hot people look like??
The first trailer for Netflix's upcoming sci-film Uglies has just been released and it has us scratching our heads (just a little bit).
The trailer, based on the popular young adult novel of the same name, shows a 15-year-old girl named Tally Youngblood (25-year-old actor Joey King) who lives in a society where every person is forced to get cosmetic surgery to become "beautiful" or "pretty" when they turn 16.
"Tally is eager for her turn to join the rest of society," the film's official logline reads. "But when a friend runs away, Tally embarks on a journey to save her that upends everything she thought she wanted."
The movie is directed by McG, who directed films like Charlie's Angels and The Babysitter. It stars King, Keith Powers, Chase Stokes, Brianne Tju, Jan Luis, Charmin Lee, and one of our faves, Laverne Cox!
Where our confusion comes in is from the people in the society deemed "uglies." According to scenes in the preview, it looks like the characters played by King, Powers, and Tju, three objectively beautiful and hot people, are among the main characters who refuse to get the cosmetic procedures that would make them pretty.
Cox plays a character who acts as the spokeswoman for the beautiful part of society, appearing as a giant hologram who tells a crowd, "for those of you turning 16 today, you've been waiting your entire lives for this moment. All the flaws you have today will be gone tomorrow. With one elegant procedure, you'll be beautiful. Because everyone is accepted, no one is left behind."
However, Tally's friend tells her that the procedure isn't all it's made out to be. "You get the surgery, they tell you what to do, and that's it," she warns.
Tally then goes out into the woods to meet a group of rebels (filled with beautiful actors) who refused to get the surgery called The Smoke.
We're very excited to see Cox in this role, which seems wonderfully villainous and evil. She posted on Instagram about it, saying, "I hope you're as excited as I am. I had so much fun shooting this film. I've dreamed about playing a role like this my entire life. The movie is really good you guys! So excited!!!!!!!"
Uglies could very well be the next Hunger Games, and the book has two sequels, so a movie trilogy isn't out of the question.
The film debuts on Netflix on September 13.
