Prepare to say goodbye to your favorite gay high schoolers!
After three beloved seasons, Heartstopper is coming to an end this summer with the release of a finale movie that promises to wrap up the love story between Kit Connor's Nick Nelson and Joe Locke's Charlie Spring.
On the fourth anniversary of the show's premiere, Netflix released the first teaser trailer with cute behind-the-scenes images of the actors. The clip also announced that the movie, titled Heartstopper: Forever, is set to drop on the streamer July 17, 2026.
The film picks up right where season 3 ended as Nick and Charlie embark on adulthood and make decisions about their future. Many of their friends take their relationships to the next level, so the two lovebirds are facing their biggest challenge yet. With Nick headed to college, can they survive a long-distance relationship?
"The most pressing issue for Nick and Charlie, as we know from the end of season 3, is that Nick will soon be leaving for university, effectively making Nick and Charlie a long-distance couple," Alice Oseman, the creator of the graphic novel the series is based on, tells Netflix’s Tudum.
"For a teenage relationship, this is a pretty huge hurdle to overcome. Each of them has some conflicting feelings about this development. Nick isn’t sure who he is without Charlie, and Charlie is nervous about being left behind. They have some work to do — both on their relationship and individually."
Alongside Locke and Connor, who are also executive producers on the film, William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Jenny Walser, Rhea Norwood, and Leila Khan are also starring.
"On a basic level, of course, I want the movie to be a beautiful and emotional send-off for the Heartstopper story — celebrating what Heartstopper means to people, while offering a chance to say goodbye to our beloved characters, and many hints of what’s to come in the characters’ future lives," Oseman said.
The Heartstopper creator said they were initially "apprehensive" about ending the series with a movie rather than a full season, but came around to the idea.
"Once I began to see the entire vision, I knew it would be something even more beautiful than a regular season could achieve," Oseman said. "We are feeling very ambitious about what is possible in a movie format. With no need for end-of-episode cliffhangers or a new twist every episode, every part of Heartstopper can be elevated to a higher quality to create something memorable, sophisticated, and atmospheric."
