We have to wonder: what does ableist, anti-semitic, and transphobic author JK Rowling think about the Barbie movie’s take on womanhood?
Actually, no we don’t, we don’t care what she thinks. But we do care that Barbie, with its cast that includes trans actor Hari Nef as one of the brilliant and beautiful Barbies, has broken a decade-old box office record previously set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 back in 2011.
In its opening weekend, Barbie officially had the third-highest opening weekend gross for Warner Bros., just after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Deathly Hallows Part 2. However, while it wasn’t able to break that box office record for WB, the film has recently broken another, bigger one.
After just two and a half weeks in theaters, Barbie has already grossed $1 billion, making it the fastest Warner Bros. movie to reach that mark. Barbie has reached the mark in just 17 days. The previous record holder was Deathly Hallows Part 2 at 19 days. If this means that Rowling becomes less culturally relevant, we are all for it!
Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is reaching these huge numbers despite being a big target for the Right's “anti-woke” contingent.
Conservatives and Far Right commentators of all kinds have been complaining about Barbie’s “woke” message to kids, with one Fox News guest calling it the “most insidious packaging of feminist cliches and trans grooming that you have ever seen.”
Those on the Right predicted that Barbie’s box office would suffer because of its “wokeness.” They couldn’t have been more wrong.
