Joshua Bassett Stars in Disney's New 'Better Nate Than Ever' Trailer

better nate than ever

The out singer and actor reunites with High School Musical: The Musical: The Series creator Tim Federle.

We've got Broadway dreams, we've got fun aunts, we've got gay kids, and we've got shirtless Joshua Bassett. What more could you ask for?

The first trailer for Disney+'s upcoming original movie Better Nate Than Ever has dropped and we can't wait to see the whole thing. Based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Tim Federle, Better Nate Than Ever stars Rueby Wood as Nate Foster, a 13-year-old with Broadway dreams as big as his heart.

Federle, who created the terrific, queer-inclusive Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, based the book on his own childhood as a young, aspiring theatre performer. Since it came out in 2013, Better Nate Than Ever has been a favorite among LGBTQ+ readers and big dreamers.

In the trailer we see the outgoing and excitable 7th grader trying out for his middle school play, which he can't get a role in. Soon his best friend tells him that there's a casting call for kid actors for a new Lilo and Stitch Broadway musical. Thanks to a chance encounter with his long-lost aunt (Lisa Kudrow) he has a place to stay in the Big Apple and runs off to follow his dreams.

The film also stars out HSM:TM:TS star Joshua Bassett as Nate's older brother and Aria Brooks as Nate's best friend and fellow weirdo, Libby. Bassett even appears in the trailer shirtless in a bath towel. It seems he starts off the movie a little reluctant about his brother's talents, but after Nate goes viral on TikTok while in New York, he learns that there's more to Nate than appears.

The movie features original songs performed by the cast, and we get a taste of two of them in the trailer. First we hear Wood singing the song "Big Time," and then we hear a piece of Wood and Brooks singing the upbeat song "#GoAwf."

Federle's delightfully queer Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which stars Bassett along with Olivia Rodrigo, Larry Saperstein, and Frankie A. Rodriguez, was recently renewed for a third season. The upcoming season will follow the students of Salt Lake City's East High as they go to a summer camp where they'll be performing songs from Camp Rock, High School Musical movies, and Frozen.

Better Nate Than Ever debuts April 1 on Disney+.
