Netflix Announces Gay Holiday Romcom 'Single All the Way'

Netflix gay romcom.

Looks like the queer yuletide isn't ending any time soon.

Last year saw an unprecedented number of major LGBTQ+ moves in the holiday rom-com genre. And for those thinking that it was a one-time gig, it looks like we've got the first bit of news: Netflix seems to be the first out the gate with the announcement for this holiday season. Actors Michael Urie, Philemon Chambers, and Luke MacFarlane are set to star in Single All the Way, a new project from Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer.

In the film, Peter (Urie) gets his best friend Nick (Chambers) to go home with him for the holidays and pretend the pair are in a relationship. Peter's mother sets him up on a blind date with her trainer James (MacFarlane), which presumably where the comedy kicks in.

"What I love most about this hysterical, moving project is that it is simply a genuine holiday romantic comedy that explores friendship and love between gay men," Muse Entertainment's Joe S. Rice, who is producing, told Variety.

Both Urie and MacFarlane, who are known for projects like Ugly Betty and Brothers & Sisters respectively, are both out actors. Chambers' sexuality isn't yet known but he starred in the short film Of Hearts and Castles which screened at the Seattle Queer Film Festival among other events. (Editor's Note: After publishing this story a reader pointed out that in a promotional post for Of Hearts and Castles, Chambers wrote that for the project he was "living out my truth on camera," likely meaning he identified with the sexuality of the role.)

Barry Bostwick, Jennifer Robertson, Jennifer Coolidge, and Kathy Najimy will fill supporting roles in Single All the Way.

Mayer told Variety that when he "sat down to write this movie, I made a list of all the things I personally wanted to see in a holiday rom-com. The list ran the gamut, from honestly portraying the uniqueness of gay friendships and relationships, to the often hilarious dynamics of our families, to Jennifer Coolidge. I'm so grateful to Netflix for embracing all of it. I can't wait to see it come to life."

The project is expecting to debut later this year.
