"Please join me in pledging to go fur-free." Yes ladies and gentlemen, Carmen Carrera has taken up the cause.
Model, actor, and former RuPaul's Drag Race contestant Carmen Carrera is the latest celebrity to sign on to the effort to go fur free. The star announced the decision in a new PSA for PETA, released exclusively to Out today.
"Learning about the fur industry I didn't realize that these animals suffer to the very end," Carrera says in the video that includes footage of what happens to animal in order to acquire their fur for clothing. "I've seen videos of animals getting beaten that are crying for help. I've seen the worse conditions where some of these animals are kept." In the video, Carrera alternates between cutting up a fur vest and holding an animal's skinned carcass.
"The animal's cries really got me because you know that they are alive, they are awake, they can see what's going on," she continues.
"Within the fashion industry, there's so many huge designers who actually set the tone for our fashion that are actually embracing being fur-free," Carrera says referencing recent moves made by bold names in the business. "Like Versace, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Armani, Stella McCartney, Tommy Hilfiger, I mean all of these names -- Gucci -- all of these folks are the trend setters. I hope that continues on and we can save some animals because the power is in our hands."
With the video, Carrera shot an ad for PETA. "Transform Your Wardrobe," the poster reads. "Don't Wear Fur."
