You may remember democratic senior senator Chuck Schumer as the last New York state elected official to support civil unions over same-sex marriage. Well, last night at a private dinner among gay leaders and elected officials (there was risotto!) Schumer announced he's had a change of heart: He now supports full marriage equality and is in favor of reversing the Defense of Marriage Act, which he originally backed. This morning his office confirmed his switched position, stating: "It's time. Equality is something that has always been a hallmark of America and no group should be deprived of it. New York, which has always been at the forefront on issues of equality, is appropriately poised to take a lead on this issue."
