The 2019 GLAAD Media Awards Nominations Are Here

GLAAD Media Awards

The GLAAD Media Awards are turning 30.

The GLAAD Media Awards announced its nominees for the best in film, journalism and other media when it comes to fair, accurate and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues on Friday. Pose star MJ Rodriguez and Crazy Rich Asians star Nico Santos announced the nominees via livestream at the Sundance Film Festival.

Five films will compete for outstanding wide release film, including Blockers, Crazy Rich Asians, Deadpool 2, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, and Love, Simon while 10 films will compete for outstanding limited release film, including Boy Erased, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and The Favourite. Pose, Black Lightning, and The Handmaid’s Tale will compete for outstanding drama series against seven other shows, while Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Vida, and Modern Family will square off among other nominees in the outstanding comedy series category.

GLAAD pulled Bohemian Rhapsody from its outstanding film nomination after The Atlantic published a report detailing multiple allegations of sexual assault against its former director Bryan Singer, Variety reports. “This week’s story in The Atlantic documenting unspeakable harms endured by young men and teenage boys brought to light a reality that cannot be ignored or even tacitly rewarded,” GLAAD said in a statement to Variety.

This year will be the first time that GLAAD will honor LGBTQ-inclusive video games. They’ve also included special recognition awards for Netflix’s Nanette starring Hannah Gadsby, TransMilitary, a Logo documentary and House of Mamis, a Spanish-language docuseries about a Mexico City voguing community that ran on INTO.
