Argentina’s Next President Loves His Drag Queen Son

Argentina’s Next President Loves His Drag Queen Son

President-elect Alberto Fernàndez has continued to support his son in the face of right-wing attacks.

DYHZY is one of the hottest drag queens in Argentina, with over 150,000 followers on Instagram. He also just so happens to be the 24-year-old son of the nation's newly-elected president, Alberto Fernandez.

Fernandez won election during Argentina's October presidential race, defeating right-wing incumbent Mauricio Macri with 45 percent of the overall vote. But following his decisive win, the center-left politician has fielded attacks from conservatives about his support for his son's career.

For instance, Eduardo Bolsonaro -- the son of Brazil's homophobic far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro -- retweeted a photo juxtaposing the two political offspring. In his photo, he poses with a semi-automatic rifle.

"Son of the President of Argentina / Son of the President of Brazil," the original post said. Bolsonaro added: "This is not a meme."

Fernandez, however, continued to defend his son in the face of prejudice and hate, saying that he is nothing but proud of DYHZY, whose real name is Estanislao Fernandez. "I have pride in my son, how can I not be proud?" he recent told the radio show Radio Con Vos via Ushuaia Noticias. "My son is a rights activist in that community. I would worry if my son was a criminal, but he is a great man."

The president-elect should be proud. In addition to his massive social following, DYZHY is an extremely talented drag artist whose best looks are often pulled directly from geek culture. He has dressed as d.Va from the video game Overwatch, superheroes Captain Marvel and Catwoman, and a whole slew of League of Legends characters.

However, his political lineage hasn't always been easy for DYHZY, who initially deleted his Instagram account after his father announced his run for president. But in a June interview with the Argentine broadcaster Canal Net, the performer said he eventually came around to the campaign.

"The other day I got to work and a guy told me, 'You are the son of my hope,'" he said. "[...] I thought 'How cool!' I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for my father, but it also doesn't take away the possibility of growing on my own merits."

DYHZY's father -- who will assume office on December 10 -- is set to lead one of the world's most LGBTQ+ affirming countries. Argentina bans discrimination on the basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity in employment and housing, has a nationwide ban on conversion therapy, and allows gay and bisexual men to donate blood. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2010.
