Hello Out readers!
Disney has once again shown its hand, and is proving that queer youth are not a priority at the company by cutting a trans storyline from the upcoming Pixar show Win or Lose.
Win or Lose is an eight-episode series coming to Disney+ in 2025 focusing on a co-ed softball team made up of a diverse group of kids. According to reports, one episode would have featured a character discussing their gender identity, but those scenes were deleted.
Chanel Stewart, a 17-year-old trans actress who voices the character spoke out, saying that she is "very disheartened" that her character will now be a cis girl in the show.
"The thought of authentically portraying a transgender teenage girl made me really happy. I wanted to make this for the transgender kids like me," she said.
"From the moment I got the script, I was excited to share my journey to help empower other trans youth. I knew this would be a very important conversation. Trans stories matter, and they deserve to be heard," she added.
It seems Disney disagrees.
"When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline," a spokesperson for Disney said.
It truly is a shame that Disney is kowtowing to conservative pressure and erasing valuable representation for queer and trans youth.
