Crushing on gay boys: we’ve all been there.
Pop princess Olivia Rodrigo is making us all cackle with the lyrics from her new song “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl,” in which she tells the tale as old as time of a straight girl falling for gay boys.
“Talked to this hot guy, swore I was his type,” Rodrigo sings on the new track. “Guess that he was making out with boys, like, the whole night. Everything I do is tragic/Every guy I like is gay. The morning after I panic/Oh god what did I say?”
Isn’t that just how it always goes?
So far, Rodrigo’s most famous public relationship has been with her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett. After the two dated, Bassett came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
In a video with Clevver News, Bassett was gushing about how much he loves Harry Styles.
“He’s just cool. Who doesn’t think Harry Styles is cool? Also, he’s not. He’s very charming too. Lots of things,” he said. “I guess this is also my coming out video I guess.”

Later, Bassett posted a statement on his social media further talking about the subject, saying he is still figuring out his sexuality.
“My entire life people have told me my sexuality,” he wrote. “People have shamed me for things they know nothing about.”
“It’s 2021. We are the generation of love & growth, it’s time we start acting like it,” he continued. “Whether you love me, hate me, or damn me to hell, I love you all the same.”
Rodrigo’s sophomore album GUTS comes out this Friday. So far, she’s released the singles “Vampire” and “Bad Idea Right?”
