Ice Spice is not affected by Matty Healy’s inane comments at all.
Matty Healy, the lead singer of the band The 1975, has been constantly getting his name in the news as of late for making cruel, ignorant, racist, and derogatory remarks and jokes. But now we know that at least some of them never got under the skin of the intended target.
Earlier this year while on The Adam Friedland Show podcast, Healy and the hosts mocked Ice Spice and Asian people by doing mock stereotypical accents and calling her “dumb,” an “Inuit Spice Girl,” and “a chubby Chinese lady.” Ice Spice is of Dominican and Nigerian descent.
In a recent interview with Variety, though, Spice has now spoken on the controversy. Spice has apparently been a fan of The 1975 ever since she was a teen, and even after the insults, she still wasn’t bothered.
“When I had heard that little podcast or whatever, I was so confused. Because I heard ‘chubby Chinese lady’ or some shit like that, and I’m like, ‘Huh? What does that even mean?’ First of all, I’m thick. What do you mean Chinese? What?” she said.
“But then they apologized or whatever. And the whole time, I didn’t really care,” she continued. “But that’s funny because I saw him at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a couple days ago, and he was like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ and I’m like, ‘Of course.’ He apologized to me a bunch of times. We’re good.”
While Healy is deleting his Twitter in embarrassment after being completely schooled by boygenius member Lucy Dacus after he made an ableist comment about the band, and announcing that his band will go on an indefinite hiatus from live shows due to all the controversy he causes, Ice Spice is unbothered and getting ready for a Best New Artist Grammy nomination and her next big move.
