Less than a week after it happened, Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp is already making jokes about his viral coming out.
Last week, Schnapp, who plays Will Byers on the hit Netflix show, publicly came out as gay. Fans, peers, and friends have all been supportive.
Now, Schnapp and his friends can be seen joking about the viral coming out in a new TikTok posted by one of his friends. The video is a riff on the recent trend of fake celebrity death announcements.
In the video a room full of teens are sitting together on a couch when one of them tells the rest to be quiet.
"Hold on, guys! Guys! Guys! Guys!" he says urgently. "'Noah Schnapp: gay at eighteen.'"
As all the friends start shouting in disbelief, the camera pans over to reveal that Schnapp himself is at the end of the couch, shouting "Oh my God" louder than anyone else in the room.
Schnapp posted a video on TikTok last week using an audio clip saying "you know what it never was? That serious. It was never that serious. Quite frankly, it will never be that serious."
He included the caption: "When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was 'we know.'
"I guess I'm more similar to Will than I thought," he also wrote.
In the most recent season of Stranger Things, Schnapp's character Will Byers has been dealing with his emerging sexuality and crush on his best friend Mike. While Mike and the others are all getting girlfriends, Will has been feeling left behind, and jealous of Mike's relationship with Eleven.
In one touching episode, Will's older brother Jonathan comforted him, telling him that no matter what he does or who he is, he'll always be his brother and he'll always love him. While Will hasn't officially "come out" on the show, it's been a great depiction of what it's like being a gay youth, and we can't wait to see where the plot goes in the rest of the series.
Season 5 of Stranger Things is set to go into production this year.
