After playing the queer rock star in the hit film, Egerton went on to record the audiobook for John's recently released memoir, Me. In the recording, the actor recounts that John is fond of doling out drag names: John's femme alter ego was Sharon, his former boyfriend and manager John Reid (played in Rocketman by Richard Madden) was christened Beryl, rocker Rod Stewart was called Phyllis, and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury was Melina.
And in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Egerton revealed that he was given his own drag persona. "I think that's how you know he really likes you," he explained. "My drag name is Blodwyn and my surname is Campervan... Elton's very keen that the stress not be on camper van. It's on camper van, at the end."
The name was apparently inspired by the Welsh word for flower and Egerton's regular RV road trips with his girlfriend, Emily Thomas.
But the actor wasn't satisfied with merely being given a drag name, he had to bring Blodwyn Campervan to life during a holiday at one of John's homes. "I went to stay with him a few weeks ago in his place in the South of France," he recalled. "And after he went to bed I found his Polaroid camera -- and I borrowed my girlfriend's clothes and I dressed up as what I imagined Blodwyn Campervan might be and took some photos of me and my girlfriend."
Egerton's girlfriend even joined in on the gender-bending fun by drawing on a mustache. "So -- we both cross-dressed for Elton and David [Furnish]'s amusement and put it their guest book before we left."
