Kevin Spacey No Longer Faces Any Sexual Assault Charges

All Sexual Assault Charges Against Kevin Spacey Have Been Dropped

The actor could still face damages in a civil lawsuit.

Prosecutors have dropped the last remaining sexual assault charges against Kevin Spacey after his accuser reportedly died.

The victim, who was never publicly identified, accused the actor of sexually assaulting him in 2016. That came amidst a slew of allegations from figures including Anthony Rapp, who alleged that Spacey had tried to molest him at a party when Rapp was just 14 years old. The two were both acting on Broadway at the time: Spacey in Long Day's Journey Into Night and Rapp in Precious Sons.

Accusations were also leveled by Harry Dreyfuss, son of actor Richard Dreyfuss. The younger Dreyfuss wrote that Spacey persisted in fondling him despite his obvious discomfort and indication the touching should stop.

More than 20 additional allegations were also connected with Spacey's time as Artistic Director at The Old Vic theater in London.

While the majority of claims didn't result in prosecution, an unnamed masseur pressed charges against the actor after claiming Spacey locked the door during an October 2016 massage and repeatedly tried to force him to touch his groin. The accuser, who was referred to as "John Doe" in the case, accused him of sexual battery, false imprisonment, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, among other charges.

That case, however, relied on testimony from the victim. After the individual passed away earlier this year due to unknown causes, prosecutors felt they couldn't proceed.

"The sexual assault allegations cannot be proved without the participation of the victim," wrote Christina Buckley, the head deputy in the DA's sex crimes unit, in a report cited by the entertainment magazine Variety. "Thus, the case was declined."

Last year, prosecutors dropped changes in a separate case stemming from an alleged incident in 1992. According to the Los Angeles District Attorney, that incident fell outside the statute of limitations. Meanwhile, prosecutors in Massachusetts dropped charges in another case "due to an unavailability of complaining witnesses."

Spacey could still he held liable for damages in a pending civil case, however.

Since the allegations first emerged, Spacey has kept a mostly low profile. He came out as gay in response to the allegations from Anthony Rapp, which he denied, then disappeared from public with only a few appearances over the next two years. During that time, Netflix severed ties with him, killing off his character on House of Cards and the biopic All the Money in the World recast his role.

However, in a bizarre, cryptic YouTube video posted last December, Spacey channeled Frank Underwood by addressing the audience directly to promise that he'd be back and that everyone would soon "know the full truth."
