Welcome to another Wednesday, Out readers!
I want to talk to you about one of the most exciting movies coming out this year: Ponyboi!
Ponyboi is written by and starring intersex actor, writer, and activist River Gallo, who you may recognize from the documentary Every Body and the 2023 Out100!
Their new film Ponyboi is the first narrative feature film to be written by and starring an intersex person, and it's one of the best movies you'll see this year (read my review here).
I first saw Ponyboi at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it was one of my favorite movies I saw. More recently, I was honored to exclusively premiere the trailer at Out.com this week along with an interview with Gallo themself.
Ponyboi follows an intersex sex worker named Ponyboi (played by Gallo) over the course of one Valentine's Day in New Jersey when they must go on the run from the mob after a bad drug deal. It also stars Dylan O'Brien, Victoria Pedretti, Indya Moore, and Murray Bartlett.
"I mean, there couldn't be a better time for an intersex movie like this because the reality is, the right is pushing this agenda of a false idea of gender and of sex," Gallo says about the movie. "The reality is there aren't just two sexes and there aren't just two genders. Intersex people exist, and not only do intersex people exist, but intersex people represent almost 2 percent of the population, which is actually higher than the amount of trans people, percentage wise."
Ponyboi will be in theaters June 27, and you have the opportunity to host your own screening in your local community by heading to https://www.ponyboithefilm.com/.
