Gay Games
I noticed in the latest issue of Out the article referring to the Blizzard Entertainment game World of Warcraft and how homophobia seems to be a problem there [“Elf Love”]. World of Warcraft, as the writer knew, is a mass multiplayer online role-playing game, and there are quite a few of those out there currently. I happen to be playing one as of late called Star Wars Galaxies.
I myself am gay and have managed to find, without even looking, an in-game life partner, if you will. In fact, in Star Wars Galaxies you are able to marry each other whether you be male/male, female/female, or female/male. Not only can you marry one another, you can also flirt, hug, kiss, and express various other affections, similar to the way The Sims works. What I like about this game compared to others, like Warcraft, is that there really isn’t any outright, blatant homophobia. People can’t just outright attack you for kissing one another in the town square. People can possibly say something to you, but that’s what surprised me: They don’t, really. And in contrast to World of Warcraft, if you get harassed by someone, they can be completely kicked off the network and have to sign on through a completely different server with a new character and everything. What’s even cooler is how some people even comment on how cute our characters are together. What warms my heart even more is finding out straight people who control the characters are venturing out of the box and having gay characters. I guess everyone does have a little gay in them, heh?
