German politician Dominik Krause made history when he was elected mayor of Munich and celebrated by publicly kissing fiancé Sebastian Müller.

The handsome pair sharing a kiss is going viral again as video footage from the March election resurfaced online.

The election marks the first time a Green Party candidate or out gay politician will hold the office of Mayor of Munich.

At a time when LGBTQ+ rights are being attacked from every angle, and the few queer politicians we do have feel the need to tone themselves down to fit more neatly into our heteronormative society, people online are finding it revelatory to watch a gay politician refuse to shy away from a normal display of affection.

Dominik Krause has been elected mayor of Munich, marking a historic moment as both the first Green Party leader and the city’s first out gay mayor. The 35-year-old secured victory with 56.4% of the vote, defeating former Social Democratic Party mayor Dieter Reiter in the run-off. Krause celebrated the win by kissing his fiancé, Sebastian Müller, after thanking “the love of my life, without whom all of this would not have been possible.” Sharing the moment on Instagram, he wrote: “Munich, you are simply insane! Our town has chosen to break the dawn today. Thank you for this incredible trust. Let’s get it on!” Krause, who has served on the city council since 2014 and became Second Mayor in 2023, is a Green politician, with a focus on climate action, sustainable urban development, digitalisation, and social policy. As mayor, he has pledged to prioritise affordable housing, accelerate transport reform, strengthen climate protections, and champion an open, cosmopolitan Munich. After winning the election, the 35-year-old politician hugged and kissed his fiancé on stage, after thanking “the love of my life, without whom all of this would not have been possible.”

The sweet moment went viral when the election results came in at the end of March, but it has been making the rounds on social media again this week as new people discover the video clip.

Krause met Müller while at dance school in 2007, which led to the two men becoming friends before eventually starting to date. The lovebirds got engaged in 2024 and plan to wed soon.

Between Krause being elected and the Netherlands electing Rob Jetten as its first gay prime minister, Europe is really making strides in LGBTQ+ representation.
