Oscar winner and famously gender-bending performer Tilda Swinton is set to reprise her role as a cross-dressing character named Ella/Max in an off-Broadway production of Manfred Karge’s Man to Man at New York City’s Lucille Lortel Theatre in February 2027.
As Deadline first reported, this will be Swinton’s New York stage debut —with her appearance in Man to Man marking her first time back on stage “in four decades.” The announcement was made by producers Brian and Dayna Lee, the Royal Court Theatre, Berliner Ensemble, and Madison Wells Live.
A one-person show, Man to Man tells the story of a woman named Ella who takes on her dead husband Max’s identity, including his job as a crane operator living in 1930s Weimar-era Germany on the brink of World War II. Throughout the show, she convinces everyone around her of new persona as a means to survive the harsh conditions she encounters during the Nazi takeover of Germany.
Throughout Swinton’s acclaimed career, she has portrayed a number of characters who defy the expectations of gender through their presentation, the gender roles they perform, and actions they take. Her film debut in 1986’s Caravaggio, a fictionalized retelling of the life of painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, found Swinton playing a character named Lena, a strong-willed working class woman surviving in a patriarchal world.
In 1992, she played the titular character in Orlando, a loose adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando: A Biography that follows a 400-year historical account of an English nobleman who changes from a man to a woman without explanation, tracking how he navigates the evolution of society over time. In 2013, she starred in the post-apocalyptic film Snowpiercer about a train divided by class navigating the end of the world. In it, she plays a no-nonsense official called Mason who’s referred to as both “Sir” and “She” throughout. All of these characters, and more, have cemented her as an androgynous, gender-defying icon, and make her return to Ella/Max all the more enticing.
Swinton originated the Man to Man role in 1987 at the Traverse Theatre, which then moved to London’s Royal Court Theatre in 1988. For the revival, Swinton is teaming back up with her inaugural collaborators, director Stephen Unwin and designer Bunny Christie.
After London, the show will also have limited runs in at the Traverse Theatre in Scotland as well as the Berliner Ensemble in Germany, and then make its way to New York City. Previews for NYC start on February 21, 2027 with opening night on February 28, 2027. Here’s hoping we can snag some tickets to this coveted, can’t-miss performance.
