Prepare Yourself: Moulin Rouge! is Coming to the Stage
The smash movie musical takes the stage.
Fans of the Baz Luhrmann romance can do the can-can, too!
The Oscar-winning 2001 movie musical is coming to the stage, Variety reports. John Logan (Skyfall, Gladiator) is tapped to pen the book, while Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) is set to direct.
Luhrmann has praised the choice of leadership for the theatrical adaptation, explaining in a statement: "I first encountered Alex Timbers through the remarkable and inventive production of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and the brilliance of Here Lies Love. I immediately recognized the young director's creative spirit and felt we shared similar sensibilities and instincts."
He continued, "It's immensely gratifying to know that a new wave of artists will be leading Moulin Rouge! into its rightful theatrical realm."
Moulin Rouge! follows the love story between a writer (played by Ewan McGregor in the movie) and cabaret star (Nicole Kidman) in Paris' Montmartre neighborhood. The film is filled with explosive rock music, quick cuts, bright colors, and an overall essence of wild glamor that only Luhrmann has ever quite attained. Check out the trailer below.
Global Creatures is developing the project. No premiere date has been announced.
