'The Politician' Trailer Is So Gay There’s a Rimjob Joke

A new era is almost upon as: the era of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix takeover. The TV impresario’s first Netflix show, The Politician, premieres next month and now we have the first trailer, which is so gay there’s a Charli XCX song in it.

The Politician stars Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect, Dear Evan Hansen) as Payton, an overachiever with his eyes set on the presidency... of his high school class. How many times has Ryan Murphy seen Election? Platt is definitely too old to still be playing a teenager, but who cares? Definitely not Ryan Murphy, who forced us to believe an aging Lea Michele was post-pubescent for roughly half of Glee

The trailer primarily focuses on Payton’s ambitious run for office against Astrid (Bohemian Rhapsody’s Lucy Boynton), which faces a setback when his running mate Infinity Jackson (Zoey Deutsch) is caught using a gay slur. Her mother, played by Jessica Lange, is unimpressed. “I don’t understand why calling a gay man a ‘butt munch’ was such a scandal,” she says. “That’s what gays do. Munch butts and celebrate Halloween.”

I mean... tea.

Thankfully, Payton has the support of what looks like a pretty hunky boyfriend, two data-analyzing lackies, and a mother played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Paltrow is making her return to Murphy’s ensemble of high-paid players, having done a guest run back in the Glee days that included covers of “Landslide” and “Forget You.” Will she remember the names of any of her Politician co-stars, or even that she was in the series? Only time will tell.

The Politician is out on Netflix September 27.
