Madonna Celebrates 60th Birthday with Malawian Charity

Madonna

The pop icon is teaming up with Facebook and Ripple to raise money for Malawian orphans.

Next month is Madonna's 60th birthday. But what do you get the pop icon who has everything? All she wants is better resources for Malawian orphans.

Madge has taken to Facebook ahead of her big day to ask her fans to contribute to her foundation, Raising Malawi. Nearly one million Malawian children have lost one or both parents to HIV. For over a decade, the organization has helped bring education, scholarship funding, and healthcare to the children of Malawi.

"I have an unwavering commitment to providing vulnerable children with a loving home. For my birthday, I can think of no better gift than connecting my global family with this beautiful country and the children who need our help most," said Madonna. "Every dollar raised will go directly to meals, schools, uniforms and healthcare. I want to come together with my friends, fans and supporters to change the lives of Malawian children and let them know they are nurtured, protected and loved. Through their generous match, Ripple is doubling the impact each individual can make."

On August 16, pop in your VHS copy of Desperately Seeking Susan or relive her country phase with your Music CD. And if you're feeling generous, you can also donate to Raising Malawi via the Facebook fundraiser.
