Our angsty, misunderstood revel dreams are coming true: Alanis Morissette's iconic Jagged Little Pill album is getting the American Idiot treatment and being made into a musical. And, at long last, production has began and the show's debut has been announced for May 2018 at Cambridge's American Repertory Theater. We've got one hand in our pocket and the other one is Googling how to buy presale tickets.
There's more good news where that came from: Diablo Cody (Juno, Orange Is The New Black) has written the book and Diane Paulus, who won a Tony for the 2013 revival of Pippin, is set to direct. American Idiot's Tom Kitt is handling orchestrations.
"This team that has come together for this Jagged Little Pill musical is my musical theatre dream come true," Morissette said in a statement. "The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all this searing talent. Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul's marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom, and complexity."
We're already imagining the grand finale, where everyone in the audience is standing and screaming, "It's like rain, on your wedding day," at the top of their lungs as our protagonist emerges triumphantly from a tale of heartbreak and pain to realize she's all the stronger for it.
In anticipation of this historic moment in musical theater, we offer Alanis' "Ironic" video as an appetizer for the main course:
