Laura Jane Grace Plays North Carolina, Burns Birth Certificate On Stage

Laura Jane Grace

The transgender front woman for Against Me! declared “goodbye gender!” in her fiery protest of the state’s discriminatory laws.

Punk rocker and trans activist Laura Jane Grace didn't back down from playing a scheduled concert Sunday in Durham, North Carolina.

That's despite recent controversy over the state's HB2 law, which prevents transgender men and women--like Grace--from using restrooms and changing facilities matching their gender identity. The state could be headed to federal court after the U.S. Department of Justice sued North Carolina for violating civil rights law.

Musicians and other entertainers have boycotted the Tar Heel State, but not Grace.

Against Me! played their set, and Grace included her own tribute to the law--she lit her birth certificate on fire on stage.

"Goodbye, gender!" she said as the document went up in flames.

The proceeds from her concert went to the Time Out Youth Center in Charlotte.

The Out100 alumna will be releasing a memoir, Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock's Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout, this fall.
