Gay Dads Star in Touching New Allstate Ad

The real-life fathers talk about what it's like to raise their new daughter in a YouTube video titled, 'Here's to Firsts.'

Gay dads Danny and Andrew are in good hands in an Allstate online advertisement posted to YouTube on Sunday, featuring a two-minute interview with the pair about fatherhood. It's reminiscent of the Tylenol #HowWeFamily campaign that featured Denis O'Hare and his husband Hugo Redwood with their son Declan.

These new parents talk about adopting their daughter Nora Alice, saying that one year ago they did not even know they were going to be parents. The commercial features an intimate look at the couple's life, surrounded by what look to be relatives who are supporting them in raising Nora.

"The second we held her I knew that she was ours," they say in unison. "Everything I think in our lives including the little girl has been meant to be," one father says.

"Within our lifetime, we have gotten married and had a child," one father says, "Twenty years ago, that wouldn't have happened. So, my hope is that she does not face the same obstacles that we did. But I'm not wishing her no obstacles. Just ones that will make her equally as strong."

The video, which was posted to Allstate's Facebook page on Sunday, has already received both supportive and negative responses. "Time to look for another insurance company ASAP! !!!" wrote Tim Mcconnell of Decatur, Alabama. But Facebook user Kim Usey was pleased. "As usual, the haters are hating, but I am delighted to see the casual, commercial, corporate recognition of *all* loving families. All happiness to *this* family," she wrote.

There's been no complaint yet from the conservative group One Million Moms, which issued a boycott in response to a Campbell's Soup commercial featuring two gay dads. However, with more and more brands showing support for LGBT people, there are few choices remaining for closed-minded shoppers.

Increasingly, LGBT people are represented in commercials, based upon a growing collection of ads featuring LGBT themes, maintained by GLAAD. The collection, now called AdRespect, tracks the portrayal of LGBT people in advertising, giving ratings to commercials around the world and contains over 4,000 images collected since 1996.

In addition to breaking boundaries, coming out in advertisements may garner its own unique accolades. The gay dads who appeared this year in the Campbell's Soup commercial were honored by People magazine as the 'Sexiest Pitchmen Alive.'
