Exclusive: Rica Shay Debuts Video for 'No More'
Watch the queer rapper-artist-dancer-poet's first solo music video.
We've been crushing on the nomadic hip-hop artist Rica Shay for some time now (check out the video for "Yaaas" to see what we mean). Now he's releasing his first solo music video. And it's not to be missed. And you might notice that emcees Kiddeville and Kallisto are featured, along with sexy Shawn Morales from the Pit Crew on RuPaul's Drag Race.
Titled "No More," the song has a personal story and message with a catchy hook that makes it an addictive dance track as well.
As Shay tells Out:
"The song itself was inspired by my longterm battle with depression. About two years ago, I took a break from promoting myself to reflect on my situation and the persona I was creating. In the end, I decided to take things in a more authentic and raw direction. 'No More' was the first song I wrote after that point. I decided to talk a bit about my past as well as recent issues I was having with the nightlife scene I had become involved with. It is more or less an anthem to follow your heart and be who you are."
Shot mostly in in Rica Shay's apartment building in Los Angeles -- an old half-vacant building in Koreatown -- he says he knew it was "the perfect location for a video" after he moved in. "With most videos shot in L.A. there's a 'bubbly' and 'pop' aesthetic that comes with it," he says. "I wanted this project to highlight the grungy art scene that has been cultivating in Los Angeles."
