When the internet has questions, Alexis Rose Hinkley often has something to say — and the nursing credentials to back it up.

Known to more than half a million followers as @travelingnurselex, Hinkley is a registered nurse, creator, and advocate who first built her platform educating audiences through the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, the high-femme lesbian brings her health care experience and sharp commentary to conversations spanning LGBTQ+ rights, public health, and social justice, including Palestinian liberation.

This year, Hinkley expanded that advocacy in a new direction. She and her partner founded Girls, Gays, and Rays, an LGBTQ+ and women-focused ocean conservation organization that received nonprofit status in August. Its mission is to bring femmes and queer folks closer to marine ecosystems — and empower them to protect the seas. She’s also building Be Serious, her new show and podcast.

“First and foremost, I am an advocate and have been since I can remember,” Hinkley says. “My work, in my eyes, is just to utilize my platform to uplift causes that need it.”

After witnessing devastating loss as an ICU nurse during the pandemic, Hinkley still chooses optimism. Her message now? “Fight like hell for each other while also finding time for love and joy.” @travelingnurselex
