Anita Obasi

Anita Obasi is making it easier for queer femmes to find each other.

Through the Sapphic Network, the community builder connects them to everything from local events and queer-owned businesses to support groups and new friends across Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. While the network welcomes the broader sapphic community, Obasi makes a point of uplifting QTBIPOC voices and experiences. What began as Sapphic LA has grown into a platform centered on queer joy outside of what she calls a “cis male framework.”

This year, that work brought Obasi to the stage at WeHo Pride as a guest of the L Project. The moment felt surreal, she says, because she started Sapphic LA “in a time where I wasn’t really sure what to do with my life.” Now, people tell her the platform has “helped them find community, feel proud of their identity,” and even grow community initiatives of their own.

Next, Obasi wants to bring the Sapphic Network to even more cities, connecting more people to queer joy. And she has a reminder for the world: “The queer Black community has directly shaped, and continues to shape the global zeitgeist.” @sapphic.la
