It’s not easy to pull laughs out of the current news cycle, but Amber Ruffin and the Have I Got News for You cast deliver hot topics with incisive humor and guffaws.
The first Black woman to write for a late-night talk show — on Late Night With Seth Meyers — Ruffin showcased her own upbeat and politically pointed commentary on The Amber Ruffin Show, which ran on Peacock from 2020 to 2023.
This year, Ruffin made headlines when she was removed from a gig at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in favor of no host amid Donald Trump’s more draconian second term. But she has advice for these days.
“It’s a great time to try to become rooted in happiness. We are about to need it,” she says. The Second City alum came out as queer during Pride Month in 2024, encouraging folks to be proud of who they are, as she is, and quipping, “I can’t wait to be discriminated against for a new reason.”
A Renaissance woman, Ruffin has pivoted from theater to TV and back, co-writing the books for Some Like it Hot (2022) and the 2024 revival of The Wiz. “I’m going to stay open to all possibilities,” she says of her future. @amberruffin
