The Moment: October 1957: Yves Saint Laurent becomes the head of the Christian Dior fashion house.
"I have a very strong connection with Yves Saint Laurent, because it ties me and my mother together," says 20-year-old August Getty (yes, he's a scion of that Getty family). "I remember watching her open up boxes of clothes with his dresses. For me, Saint Laurent represents eternal glamour and quirkiness, while maintaining beauty." Putting on his first show this fall at New York Fashion Week, Getty is one of the youngest designers ever to display a collection on a main stage at the annual couture gala. It's an achievement that Saint Laurent, a wunderkind who took over the House of Dior at 21, would appreciate.
