The Moment: October 12, 1981: Brideshead Revisited, the British TV serial based on Evelyn Waugh's novel, premieres.

In 2012, Shane Bitney Crone (left) released a viral YouTube video that
detailed the death of his partner, Tom Bridegroom, and the rights Crone was denied in the wake of it. The clip inspired the feature-length documentary Bridegroom, which this year received a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Documentary, and led Crone to multiple, eye-opening speaking engagements. "It's all inspired me to stand up and use my voice," he says.

Dan Bucatinsky (right) scored an Emmy last fall for playing gay journalist James Novak on ABC's Scandal, only to see his character offed in a jaw-dropping March episode. The silver lining of his exit was the chance to play the gay dad to Casey Wilson's bride-to-be on the new NBC show Marry Me. But Bucatinsky's biggest coup in 2014 was reviving The Comeback, the faux reality series he produced with Lisa Kudrow, which he calls "a hugely personal passion project."
