Prince William Says He’d Be Supportive If One of His Kids Were Gay

Prince William Says He’d Be Supportive If One of His Kids Were Gay

“I think you really don’t start thinking about that until you are a parent, and I think — obviously, absolutely fine by me.”

While visiting LGBTQ+ youth charity the Albert Kennedy Trust, Prince William was asked by an unnamed gay man how he would feel if one of his own children happened to be queer. His response was very British and pretty chill, according to Gay Times.

"I've been giving that some thought recently because a couple of other parents said that to me as well," he responded. "I think you really don't start thinking about that until you are a parent, and I think -- obviously, absolutely fine by me."

He did acknowledge that his position in the aristocracy might lead to a bit more scrutiny of his hypothetical queer child. "The one thing I'd be worried about is how, particularly the roles my children fill, how that is going to be interpreted and seen," he acknowledged. "So Catherine and I have been doing a lot of talking about it to make sure they were prepared." The prince added that when it comes to family, communication is key, and "in order to help understand it you've got to talk a lot about stuff and make sure how to support each other and how to go through the process.

Prince William said he would worry "not because of them being gay, it worries me as to how everyone else will react and perceive it and the pressure is then on them." William added that he wishes being queer were more normalized "and cool, but for my family, in the position we're in, that's the bit I'm nervous about." He would "fully support whatever decision they make, but it does worry me how many barriers, hateful words, persecution, discrimination that may come. But that's for all of us to try and help correct and make sure we put that to the past."

William has lived his entire life in the public eye under intense scrutiny -- especially following the death of his mother, Princess Diana, and his own wedding, so it makes sense he'd be especially concerned about his own children being harassed by the British media, which can be especially toxic.

It's nice to hear one of the royals say they'd be cool about having a queer kid, especially after Buckingham Palace denied claims that Meghan Markle as planning to raise her child as "gender fluid." We need a queer prince or princess ASAP!
