Two friends of Oprah Winfrey's (who chose to remain anonymous) have reportedly told CNN that the actress, TV host, and mogul is considering running for president in 2020.
The friends said Winfrey is "actively thinking" about running and has been for "several months," though no definitive decision has been made. Winfrey's team did not respond to CNN's request for comment.
In the wake of Winfrey's empowering and viral Golden Globes speech last night, celebrity support for the potential presidential candidate is in no short supply. The Washington Post has quoted Meryl Streep immediately after Winfrey's words saying: “She launched a rocket tonight. I want her to run for president. I don’t think she had any intention [of declaring]. But now she doesn’t have a choice.”
In addition, Winfrey's longtime partner Stedman Graham commented to the Los Angeles Times after the speech that "It's up to the people. She would absolutely do it."
But in March, Winfrey's best friend and CBS This Morning co-host Gayle King shot down Oprah's presidential rumors, saying "I would bet my first, second born and any unborn children to come, that ain’t never happening. Never. I’ll say never on this one.”
