This Animated Movie About Two Gay Boys Looks Really, Really Sweet

Move aside, Captain Underpants.

Children's media has a devastatingly scarce collection of queer characters and stories, but two animation students at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida are setting out to change that. Beth David and Esteban Bravo have created a film, called In A Heartbeat, about two young gay students.

The pair told Queertythe film is about a boy in the closet who "runs the risk of being outed by his own heart after it pops out of his chest to chase down the boy of his dreams." David added, "We want to put out a message of love and self-acceptance to all the kids and young people who struggle to identify as LGBT+ just like Sherwin [the boy] does."

Move aside Captain Underpants, the future of children's cartoons thankfully looks a lot gayer. Watch a trailer for In A Heartbeat, below, ahead of its summer 2018 premiere:
