Harry Lloyd is concerned about his facial hair. "I have a slightly controversial beard right now," he says. "But I'm playing a 15th-century Duke," referring to his role as Ferdinand in the current production of The Duchess of Malfi at London's Old Vic.

To American audiences, Lloyd is recognizable as the conniving Viserys Targaryen on HBO's Game of Thrones -- killed off by a literal golden shower last season -- or a young Denis Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

In 2010's West End mounting of Douglas Carter Beane's The Little Dog Laughed, Lloyd played a gay-for-pay escort. "I thought that was interesting, someone who has sex with men and then goes home to his girlfriend -- that sex has become a commodity," he says. "I went to New York and I met this fascinating rent boy -- it was helpful in the demystifying of it."

While the actor, and his goatee, will be treading the boards in London until June 9, Lloyd -- whose upcoming film projects include the futuristic thriller Dreck and the Nazi-era drama Closer to the Moon -- hopes to visit America over the summer, particularly the West Coast.
