Move out of the way, Alphas! The Betas are coming.
Babies born starting on New Year's Day 2025 and going until 2039 are being labeled as a new generation — Generation Beta — according to a blog post from generations expect Mark McCrindle.
According to McCrindle, this new generation will mostly be the children of younger Gen Ys (millennials) and older Gen Z and by 2035 are expected to make up 16 percent of the global population.
Gen Beta, like Gen Alpha is labeled with the Greek alphabet as opposed to using the Latin alphabet like previous generations. This is "to signify how these different generations will be raised in a new world of technological integration," according to McCrindle.
This new generation will "live in an era where AI and automation are fully embedded in everyday life – from education and workplaces to healthcare and entertainment" and will likely be the first generation to "experience autonomous transportation at scale, wearable health technologies, and immersive virtual environments as standard aspects of daily life," McCrindle predicts.
McCrindle also notes that this new generation will come of age in a world facing major political and societal changes including "climate change, global population shifts, and rapid urbanization," resulting in Gen Beta being "more globally minded, community-focused and collaborative than ever before."
We already know that each new generation is more queer than the last. According to a poll from Business Insider and YouGov, 7 percent of Boomers identify as "something other than straight," compared to 11 percent of Gen X, and 15 percent of millennials.
A whopping 26 percent of Gen Alpha labeled themselves as "something other than straight" on the same poll. Time will tell how queer Gen Beta will be.
McCrindle is a futurist and demographer who is often credited as being one of the people to come up with and define generational labels like Gen Alpha for people born between 2010 and 2024.From our Sponsors
