Are you even holding space?
In an interview junket with Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, Gilchrist informed the actresses that queer people are "really taking the lyrics of 'Defying Gravity' and really holding space with that and feeling power in that."
Grande grabbed Erivo's perfectly manicured finger as she responded, "I didn't know that was happening."
The moment has taken on a life of its own, going viral beyond anything anyone involved could've predicted on multiple social media platforms and in real life, all just in time for the premiere of the groundbreaking blockbuster film. The interview has become a meme that the Empire State Building joked about, a warmup song for the Gay Men's Chorus, and even a gay t-shirt. "Holding space" is now a part of the culture, and we are in queer media so.
In honor of Gilchrist, Grande, and Erivo who Out honored as the Icon of the Year on the 2024 Out100, we've decided to hold some space for our favorite "brain rot" memes, and really found the power in that.
