Marvel Is Reportedly Looking for Their First Trans Superhero

Marvel might be casting the Marvel Cinematic Universe's very first transgender superhero.

Angelica Ross nearly gave her fans a heart attack on Sunday night after tweeting something vague about working with Marvel.

“Ummmm @Marvel?” she wrote. “They keep asking if I’m joining the family. You want to tell ‘em?”

The Pose star, who will appear in the new season of American Horror Story, has been very open about wanting to join the Marvel Cinematics Universe for a while now (“I’m trying to manifest me being in the Black Panther sequel,” she told me in a Jezebel interview last year), and it looks like she might just have her chance.

On Tuesday, Geeks WorldWide reported that Marvel Studios are currently in the process of casting a trans actress for the role of “Jessica,” who is described as a trans woman of any ethnicity in her 20s or 30s. The alleged casting call is also apparently open to “transgender actresses only.”

Who this “Jessica” character is isn’t quite clear, but GWW writer Vicky Depledge wonders if it might be Sera, the Thor character whom Depledge says is “Marvel’s only existing [trans woman] superhero.”

There is another Thor movie coming up — the recently announced Thor: Love and Thunder, which begins filming next summer — and that upcoming Thor sequel does have a confirmed LGBTQ+ storyline, possibly involving Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie. "As king, she needs to find her queen," Thompson teased at Comic-Con a couple weeks ago. Could “Jessica” (or Sera?) be the “queen” Thompson said that Valkyrie’s looking for in the new movie? I reached out to Marvel for confirmation of any of this, but did not hear back at the time of publication. I’ll update this story if I do.
