British singer Sam Smith took home the trophy for Favorite Male Artist - Pop/Rock at last night's American Music Awards. "#AMAs wow. What a surreal and beautiful evening. Thank you to everyone for voting. Overwhelmed x," tweeted the 22-year-old musician following his major win.
This is Smith's first major award and possibly a bellwether of bigger things to come. Though Sam's win was certainly a seismic event, the night really belong to some other Brits. One Direction nabbed the Artist of the Year, Favorite Band, Duo, or Group -- Pop/Rock, and Favorite Album -- Pop/Rock trophies. Taylor Swift won the Dick Clark Award for Excellence and 5 Seconds of Summer were named New Artist of the Year.
Katy Perry and Beyonce, who were both in the running for Artist of the Year, may not have scooped up the big trophy, but they didn't leave empty-handed. Perry was named Favorite Female Artist -- Pop/Rock, Favorite Artist -- Adult Contemporary, and her hit "Dark Horse" was dubbed Single of the Year. Beyonce cleaned up in the Soul/R&B category, winning Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Album. Spin has the complete rundown of the night's winners.
But of all the winners, its seems that Sam Smith was the only one who knew the right way to celebrate.
