Janelle James loves that the LGBTQ+ community relates to the 'cattiness' of Principal Ava Coleman

The hilarious comedian even credits her queer fans for moving the culture as Abbott Elementary gains in popularity.

There's no queen quite like Principal Ava Coleman.

It's no secret that Janelle James' portrayal of the sassy, brash, and witty character in the Emmy-winning series Abbott Elementary has entertained fans all over the world.

From lethal one-liners to undeniable physical comedy, Coleman's hilarious reads on the hit show have deeply resonated with members of the LGBTQ+ community. As fans wait for the upcoming sixth season, James promises that many more iconic moments are still to come.

"I truly did know that the show was going to be a big deal from the time I read the pilot. It was so well put together. It's not too much! Could Ava be a little nicer? Yes, but that's not as funny. She's a bad bitch! 5 seasons in, I can take a little credit for how popular it is," James tells Out.

Besides her success of Abbott Elementary, James has built an impressive career as a standup comedian. For 15 years, the actress has performed all over the world and even secured her own upcoming Netflix special. Although her celebrity status has risen over the years, James gives credit to her passionate queer fanbase for riding with her since day one.

"My LGBTQ+ community has been fans of my comedy even before this show. I always appreciate it. I think they get me. I know they find some pleasure in the cattiness and fabulousness of Ava. We move the culture and make the decisions as far as what's cool and what's hot. It's always good to have people like that in your corner!"

With Abbott Elementary on its summer hiatus, James is back on the road and returning to Las Vegas to make her debut at the legendary Aces of Comedy inside MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. It's safe to say that fans will be laughing all night as the comedian debuts new material in her one-hour set.

"I've got something for everybody! I can honestly say I'm well respected and I'm hilarious. I'm not only funny on TV, but I'm funny in person. Some would even say funnier! You wouldn't think that'd be possible, but you gotta come to the show to find out. Being multitalented is such a burden!"
