There's only one Debbie Allen.
Since 1970, the legendary triple-threat has entertained audiences and broken barriers for Black women over a historic career spanning more than five decades.
As a beloved and revered actress, dancer, and director, Allen has given her life to the performing arts and shaped culture through her notable projects such as Grey's Anatomy, A Different World, West Side Story, Fame, and so many more. There's no denying her impact on the entertainment industry and the connection she's made with the LGBTQ+ community every step of the way.
"It's so rewarding! It's more rewarding than any award. I've been working a long time, so to have an impact across the board and for every generation is so great. That's my community! It's a community that deserves respect and deserves to live well. You're part of the family! I don't know how to think of it any other way," Allen tells Out.
Although Allen has found her home within the queer community, she's sadly experienced tremendous loss and sadness throughout her career. As a celebrated figure on Broadway, she witnessed many beautiful souls lose their lives during the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s.
"When I think about the arts community and how we were so devastated by AIDS, there was no help. When people talked about AIDS, they looked away. I buried so many people I love. It's very emotional for me. What good is a celebrity if you're not here to inform? What are you doing with your celebrity? How are you helping your community?"
The iconic actress and director even created important change on A Different World at the height of the epidemic. During a groundbreaking episode of the hit show, she pushed past network resistance to air a powerful HIV/AIDS storyline that sparked crucial conversations surrounding healthcare and stigma in the Black community.
With the revival of A Different World officially streaming now on Netflix, Allen wants to incite more change by showcasing diverse representation to inspire a new generation.
"I want everyone to binge watch it! We tried for many years to bring it back. Netflix said yes and here we are! I'm so grateful that A Different World had such a big impact on AIDS. We were the first television series to address HIV. It was not applauded or wanted. This is full-circle!"
Expanding on her decades of advocacy, Allen is now supporting the HIV community in a major way by teaming up with Merck to launch Your Hive of Whole Health. This multi-year educational program helps people living with HIV build personalized networks of support to address their physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.
"People living with HIV can create their own hive of whole heath. Where are you spiritually? Do you have help? You'll find different advocacy groups and important information. People are not just surviving, they're thriving! This campaign will help millions of people. They are not alone! What you need is there for you."
