Anthony Geary, an actor known for playing Luke Spencer on General Hospital, has passed away at the age of 78. His death occurred on December 14 and was the result of complications from a scheduled operation three days earlier, according to TV Insider.

Geary played Luke on General Hospital beginning in 1978, and became one half of TV's favorite couple, Luke and Laura (played by Genie Francis), soon after. Luke and Laura's 1981 wedding on the show was watched by 30 million people, making it the most-watched episode in soap opera history.

He was nominated for 16 Daytime Emmys for outstanding lead actor in a drama series and won a record eight times.

He retired from General Hospital in 2015 and relocated to Amsterdam with his husband, Claudio Gama.

"It was a shock for me and our families and our friends," Gama said in a statement to TV Insider about Geary's passing. "For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband."
