Matt Bomer's latest role? Narrator of A Little Life.
The Fellow Travelers star lends his voice to the popular novel by Hanya Yanagihara, which celebrates its 10-year anniversary this year. Beloved by LGBTQ+ readers (including Bomer), the story follows four college friends — found family who move to NYC to chart lives and careers. The novel's center is one of these friends, Jude, a queer character who grapples with a history of violence and sexual assault.
"I was truly, deeply moved to be asked to read Hanya’s brilliant, heartbreaking, and timeless novel," Bomer told Vulture. "It’s a book that I’ve been fascinated with since I first heard about it, and having the opportunity to bring these characters to life was both a profound responsibility for me and a chance to fall in love with her work all over again. It’s a piece that, for me at least, changed me as a person after I read it — and what more can we ask for in art?"
"It's a dream to have Matt Bomer – an actor of great generosity, beauty, and depth – as the new voice of the A Little Life audiobook," Yanagihara says in a new release. "New listeners will get to experience the book as I'd always hoped; repeat ones will, I think, find new dimensions thanks to Matt's subtlety and skill."
A Little Life's audiobook debuted Tuesday. Below, Penguin Random House shared an exclusive clip. In the reading, the Out100 honoree recounts Jude's experience of processing an abusive relationship.
"There were two ways of forgetting," Bomer begins of the passage. "For many years he had envisioned unimaginatively a vault, and at the end of the day he would gather the images and sequences and words that he didn't want to think about again and open the heavy steel door only enough to hurry them inside, closing it quickly and tightly. But this method wasn't effective. The memories seeped out anyway."
