Only Half of Brits Would Feel Comfortable with a Gay Disney Princess

Respondents were more comortable with a Disney princess being overweight, a feminist, a parent, and from an ethnic minority.

While Elsa from Frozen and Merida from Brave have already been adopted in the gay cannon by queers around the world, there is yet to be an official, gay Disney princess. It is rumored, however, that Jennifer Lee, the writer and co-director of the upcoming Frozen sequel, is considering making Elsa's character openly gay.

YouGov conducted a study with over 3,000 Brits to see how comfortable they would be with a Disney Princess being a number of things, including from an ethnic minority, over age 40, overweight, a parent, feminist, and lastly, gay.

Only half of respondents reported they would feel comfortable with a Disney princess being gay. A third said they would feel uncomfortable and the remaining 17% said they weren't sure.

When compared to the other demographic factors YouGov polled, people were most uncomfortable with a Disney princess being gay. Only 10% said they'd feel uncomfortable if a Disney princess was from an ethnic minority and 29% reported being uncomfortable if a princess was a feminist. (Although, aren't they all already in their own way?)

Stats

YouGov reported that age was the key factor in guiding people's opinions: the younger people are the more comfortable they are with the prospect of a gay Disney princess. Where 67% percent of 18-24 year-olds would be comfortable, only 25% of those aged 65 or older would be comfortable.
