Leslie Gordon stepped into the role of president and CEO of Food Bank For New York City in 2020, at a time when widespread food insecurity was taking hold in a city ravaged by the COVID pandemic. Unfortunately, her work has only gotten more poignant and necessary as widespread economic inequality, the affordability crisis, and the price of groceries continue to leave many families facing empty fridges and bare cabinets.
Gordon’s work, which has gone on for nearly two decades, continues to be transformational in the lives of many who use its services. Since taking over, the organization’s food distribution has doubled and is now responsible for giving families in need 150 million pounds of food every year.
Even though her work is about making sure that people don’t go hungry, it isn’t just about sustenance, she says. It’s about treating the people she encounters every day with dignity.
“Bring your whole self to the work you do and never underestimate the power of showing up authentically,” she says. “Leadership is not about standing above people; it’s about standing with them.” @foodbank4nyc
