Any day that starts with brand new Lizzo is a good day. When it's brand new Lizzo and Missy Elliott, that's a great day.
Pop star Lizzo has released the third single from her upcoming studio album Cuz I Love You, due out on April 19. Following infectious single "Juice" and the eponymous cut she released on Valentine's Day, Lizzo released "Tempo" on Wednesday, a club banger featuring GOAT rapper Missy Elliott that is sure to improve every party it's played at through spring and summer.
Lizzo found out about Missy's verse through a singing memoji. "She sent me a memoji of herself singing her verse," Lizzo told Apple Music's Beats I show. "I got a memoji of Missy like smiling and then she just started rapping, and I was like, 'OMG what the hell' so I had to hook it up to my speaker system. But it wasn't even the actual track, it was like her going along in her studio."
The song opens with a guitar riff before the beat drops in a big way. "Slow songs are for skinny hoes," Lizzo says to open the song. "I'm a thick bitch/ I need tempo/ Fuck it up to the tempo." As you can see, "Tempo" continues Lizzo's penchant for body positive lyrics.
Missy Elliott gets in on the fun, as well, in her verse. "Kitty cat, kitty cat prrrrr/ all the thick girls down to the flrrrr," Missy purrs at the beginning of her section. Though Elliott hasn't released an album in a while, it's great to hear her verses both on Lizzo's song and on "Borderline," a cut from Ariana Grande's 2018 album Sweetener.
Cuz I Love You's first single "Juice" debuted to critical acclaim earlier in 2019 and in February she debuted the album's cover, which features the singer sitting nude on the floor looking into the camera.
"Tempo" is now available on all platforms and you can listen to it below.
