Missy Elliott comes from an era when music videos weren't a throwaway piece of a single's rollout plan (See: "Million Reasons"), but a key opportunity to create something iconic. We'll never forget Misdemeanor's "Sock It 2 Me" video, where she battles an army of giant alien robots, or "She's a Bitch," where Elliott powers through choreo in the middle of a stormy black ocean.
Today, the rapper returned to shoot a much-needed bolt of energy through music, sharing her surprise "I'm Better" video--the ultimate Friday carry with sparse trap production, cameos from rapper/producer Lamb and lewks for days. The surprise came with an announcement that Elliott will also be releasing a documentary in 2017 about her career and "breaking the mold" of female hip-hop.
In "I'm Better," Elliott dons a jacket with giant feathered shoulders and a black bobbed wig that shields her eyes; in another scene, Elliott's dancers are suspended from red silks with towering head pieces, and in the last--most legendary--frame, the "WTF" emcee dances on the floor of a swimming pool, wearing a painfully relevant "Save the Humans" zip-up. And save us, she has--watch, below.
