While Matt Bomer seems to be ducking the outcry from the transgender community over his latest movie role, producer Mark Ruffalo is meeting the criticism head on.
Ruffalo is producing Anything, which has cast Bomer as a transgender female sex worker. When the casting news broke, LGBTs responded in outrage that, once again, a cisgender male actor had been cast to play a transgender female role.
Ruffalo took to Twitter and acknowledged the backlash.
“To the Trans community. I hear you. It's wrenching to you see you in this pain. I am glad we are having this conversation. It's time.”— Mark Ruffalo (@Mark Ruffalo) 1472679635
He also explained that the casting decision was made because of his experience working with Bomer when the two appeared in The Normal Heart.
“In all honesty I suggested Matt for the role after the profound experience I had with him while making "The Normal Heart".”— Mark Ruffalo (@Mark Ruffalo) 1472680218
