The occasion is too rare not to be noted: In a rare public display of emotion, Anna Wintour broke into what seemed to be tears of joy this morning, as Michelle Obama inaugurated the new Anna Wintour Costume Center at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The First Lady (wearing a Naeem Khan dress) cut the ribbon in front of a visibly moved Wintour, and turned to the teary editrix to give her a warm hug in front of the dozen of fashion gliteratti who attended the event, including Marc Jacobs, Donatella Versace, Zac Posen, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Back in January, the institute was renamed after the Vogue editor-in-chief, who helped raise the $40 million necessary to give the gallery a refresh. The Anna Wintour Costume Center will open to the public on May 8 with a new exhibition featuring the work of Charles James.
