Tommy Ton for Club Monaco

The street style photographer reveals his latest endeavor: bag designer.

While it seems like anyone with a camera, some time to kill, and the balls to run up to Anna Dello Russo can be a street style photographer, there are very few who can consider themselves part of the top echelon. Bill Cunningham reigns supreme, with the Sartorialist's Scott Schuman acting as his main disciple. But don't discount the power yielded by a subtle Tommy Ton, who runs the blog Jak & Jil. Ton, who was voted as one of our 2011 Tastemakers, has made a name for himself by eschewing the stand-and-pose aesthetic of others and opting for a more observational role, capturing off-duty models, high-ranking editors, and other fashion hanger-ons as they hurriedly run from show to show during Fashion Weeks in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. But his latest gig has been designer, of all things. The preppy brand Club Monaco enlisted the photographer's help in designing two bags--an envelope-folio for women, and an oversized backpack for boys--though the styles, both in navy, are arguably unisex. Ton just released some photos on his site of his favorite pedestrian subjects carrying the bag, and they look terrific. Perhaps having honed his eyes over the years, the photographer realized that he didn't need to drench the accessories bells and whistles to get attention--effortless-chic was the way to make a long-lasting, classic impression.
